Dongfeng Race Team is the Chinese entry in the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. The Volvo Ocean Race is the world's toughest sailing event, where the elite of the sailing profession battle it out on the most treacherous oceans. It is a nine-month marathon on the seas, passing through four oceans and five continents.
Dongfeng Race Team will represent China in the next edition of the race and will have the interests of Chinese sailing at its core. OC Sport, one of the most respected companies in the sport of sailing, will run all aspects of the campaign working in conjunction with the main sponsor DongFeng Commercial Vehicle (DFCV).
Despite numerous successful sailing campaigns this is the first time OC Sport and it’s Executive Chairman Mark Turner will be involved in running a Volvo Ocean Race campaign. “We are aiming for a successful race entry with a Chinese team, not just a successful entry – this is an absolute, at the heart of this very exciting and challenging project,” stated Mark Turner.
Dongfeng Race Team follow Team Sanya (2011-12) and Green Dragon(2008-09) as the third Chinese entry in the race’s 40-year history.
The race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour where the athletes push themselves to the limit of endurance in what is commonly referred to as the ‘Everest of Sailing’. Over the duration of the race, the crews experience life at the extreme: no fresh food is taken on board so they live off freeze-dried food; they experience temperature variations from -15 to 40+ degrees Celsius and only take one change of clothes with them on board. They trust their lives to the skipper and each other, experience hunger and severe sleep deprivation. Watch this space!
Race Start: October 11th 2014 in Alicante, Spain.
